Summer is a great time to plant. It’s a time to enjoy the beauty of colorful flowers. Scientific studies even show that a home with live plants actually elevates the mood of the home. An actual study by scientists Miller and McCune showed plants have a positive impact on human health by lowering blood pressure, increasing attentiveness and response time, raising productivity, and lowering levels of anxiety. Not to mention plants take in what we breathe out. They inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen which means they provide a much needed resource. The cleaner the air in our homes the better! So get out those pots, purchase a small bag of potting soil and some of your favorite flowers, and dig in. My favorite advertising slogan from a local nursery is “go play in the dirt again”.
Having an out of the ordinary activity to do together that builds team work is great for the marriage and makes a great family activity. My husband has a ministry for men called “Marriage Minute Men”. You should check it out and sign your man up on facebook or twitter. He sends out a weekly mission to strengthen men's relationships with their wife and children. A while back he gave the husbands the assignment of planting flowers with their wife. As a result of his great idea, we went on a date to do just that. After dinner, we went to the local DIY store and picked out a few plants and went home to dig in and enjoy the fun! Adding this to your summer activities list is a great idea for strengthening your marriage, family, and health.
